EWNRA Statement on World Environment Day 2025

Today, on World Environment Day 2025, Ethio Wetlands and Natural Resources Association (EWNRA) joins the global community in raising its voice to #BeatPlasticPollution and protect the natural resources that sustain us.

Plastic pollution poses a critical threat to Ethiopia’s wetlands, forests, rivers, and the livelihoods that depend on them. Each year, tons of plastic waste end up in our water bodies and farmlands—endangering biodiversity, disrupting ecosystems, and undermining sustainable development.

At EWNRA, we believe that safeguarding our environment begins with collective action. From grassroots awareness to sustainable livelihood programs and ecosystem restoration efforts across the Kaffa, Sheka, and Illubabor zones, our work is rooted in protecting people and nature—together.

This year, we call on all stakeholders—local communities, government bodies, private sector partners, and fellow environmental organizations—to take concrete steps toward:

  • Reducing single-use plastics,
  • Supporting eco-friendly alternatives,
  • Advocating for stronger waste management systems, and
  • Restoring plastic-polluted landscapes and waterways.

Ending plastic pollution is not just an environmental priority—it is a social and economic imperative. Let’s unite for a cleaner, healthier Ethiopia and the world at large. Let’s protect our wetlands, forests, and natural heritage for generations to come.

Together, we can #BeatPlasticPollution.
