Ethio Wetlands and Natural Resources Association (EWNRA) marked its 25th Anniversary on Tuesday with a colorful and memorable celebration held at Elilly International Hotel.
The event brought together senior government officials, ambassadors, donors, development partners, civil society organizations, beneficiaries, and staff to reflect on the organization’s remarkable journey and achievements.
The ceremony opened with a warm welcoming speech delivered by Ato Afework Hailu, Executive Director of EWNRA, who expressed profound gratitude to partners and communities who have contributed to the organization’s long-standing success. He emphasized that the past quarter-century of achievements was made possible through strong collaboration, commitment, and community-centered development approaches.
He acknowledged government institutions, donors, community beneficiaries, staff members, and various stakeholders for their unwavering support over the past 25 years.
The opening remark was delivered by Ato Kebede Yimam, Director General of Ethiopian Forestry Development (EFD), who commended EWNRA for its long-standing partnership and its steadfast commitment to sustainable forestry and natural resource management.
Another keynote message was delivered by Ato Fasikaw Molla, Deputy Director of the Authority for Civil Society Organizations (ACSO). He praised EWNRA’s consistency and resilience, noting that the organization has thrived for 25 years at a time when many civil society organizations struggle and thousands have ceased to exist.
Speaking on behalf of the Board and the General Assembly, Dr. Elias Zerfu, Board Chairperson of EWNRA, conveyed congratulatory remarks, celebrating the organization’s achievements and reaffirming the Board’s continued support for its mission.
In a touching and emotional moment, Ato Afework was honored and crowned by the staff, Board members, and General Assembly. He was presented with symbolic gifts — including a Kaba, a sketch painting of his portrait, and a gold necklace — in recognition of his exceptional leadership, dedication, and contributions from establishment to the growth and success of EWNRA.
The celebration also featured vibrant music entertainment by the renowned musician Gash Abera Molla, whose performances added color and energy to the event. Guests enjoyed exhibitions, documentary screenings, and reflections highlighting EWNRA’s key accomplishments and long-term impact on communities and ecosystems across Ethiopia.
As EWNRA looks ahead to its next chapter, the organization reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening community resilience, and promoting sustainable development for generations to come.
