Ethio Wetlands and Natural Resources Association (EWNRA) participated in a tree planting program as part of the national green legacy movement and ecosystem restoration.
EWNRA and a bunch of other civil society organizations who are members of PHE Ethiopia Consortium have conducted a tree planting campaign to support the annual national tree planting mobilization on Friday, August 23, 2024.
This year, PHE-EC has collaborated with Shagar City, Koye-Feche Subcity, Gelan Arabsa District Government Partners at Necho specific site, in the Oromia region around Gelan town where PHE-EC along with its members planning to demonstrate IPHE in the future.
Farmers and residents of the area have participated in the program which makes the plantation more sustainable to be managed and followed up by the nearby community.
The national plan for this year set out to plant 600 million saplings within one day and the government reported 615.7 million saplings by the end of the day.”
Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative has steadily increased the number of trees being planted with public participation since it was launched in 2019. According to the government report In the first three years, a total of 16.3 billion seedlings were planted: 4.7 billion in 2019/2020, 5.9 billion in 2020/2021, and 6.7 billion in 2021/2022. This trend continued with over 7.2 billion seedlings planted in 2022/2023, setting a target of planting 7.5 billion samplings through the 2024 Green Legacy Initiative.
